Case Study 1 - Effective Claim
Advocacy
SITUATION
“Last night’s flood is washing away
our corporation’s future. What can
you do for us – and fast!”
No one could have anticipated that
fourteen inches of rain could fall
in less than 24 hours. Since the
city’s long term care facility was
located on a rise, miles from the
nearest lake or river, its
management had no coverage for flood
damage.
When the basement flooded and the
power went out, the walk-in freezers
and refrigerators for the facility’s
food service were disabled. How
could the staff clean up and repair
the flood damage -- while it
continued to feed and care for the
facility’s residents?
SOLUTION
RJ Ahmann acted immediately to
leverage its longstanding
relationship with the facility’s
insurance carrier. Within hours, an
approved contractor was onsite to
supervise cleanup. An emergency
generator was brought in, along with
temporary food storage equipment.
Once the situation was stabilized,
the RJ Ahmann team negotiated with
the carrier to reverse its decision
to deny parts of the care facility’s
initial claim. As a result of our
efforts, the carrier reimbursed the
client for water seepage, business
interruption and, months later, for
mold damage. The client experienced
no significant disruption of
operations and, even more important,
the facility’s patients were never
at risk.
